 1986 - #44 PIEDMONT AIRLINES OLDSMOBILE

THE PICTURE ABOVE IS THE OLDS OMEGA THAT TERRY DROVE IN AT LEAST ONE OF THESE RACES, AT
ROAD ATLANTA. IT ISN'T A GREAT PICTURE, BUT IT IS THE ONLY ONE THAT I HAVE. I HAVE SEEN A

VIDEO OF THIS CAR IN THE PAST, AND THE CAR WAS SOLID PIEDMONT BLUE, WITH WHITE DECALS.

INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: IN THIS START AT ROAD ATLANTA, TERRY WON THE POLE BUT FINISHED THE RACE SECOND. HE FINISHED SECOND TO DARRELL WALTRIP DRIVING THE SAME CAR (PICTURED ABOVE) THAT TERRY DROVE TO VICTORY IN CHARLOTTE THE PREVIOUS SEASON!

THERE IS SOMEWHAT OF A MYSTERY SURROUNDING THE PAINT SCHEME On THIS CAR, OR WHAT MAY HAVE BEEN A SECOND SCHEME USED IN THE SECOND OF THE TWO STARTS. THE ABOVE PHOTO COMES FROM AN ARTICLE THAT DETAILS IT BEING USED IN THE ROAD ATLANTA START, BUT THERE IS ANOTHER SCHEME THAT SOME FOLKS SAY TERRY RAN IN 1986 AS WELL.  SUPPOSEDLY THIS CAR HAD A SIMILAR PAINT SCHEME TO THE PIEDMONT CAR THAT STERLING MARLIN DROVE IN 1988, BUT WITH WHILE NUMBERS ON DOOR AND ROOF. I HAVE SEEN A CUSTOM DIECAST SPORTING THIS SCHEME, BUT NEVER ANY PICS OF THE REAL CAR. SOME CLAIM TO HAVE SEEN A PICTURE OR VIDEO OF IT, BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO GET MY HANDS ON ONE YET. PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY INFO ON THIS!

  • 1999 Wins in Talladega, in photo-finish w/ Joe Nemechek

The Slim Jim Team was to feature Terry, Bobby, and Justin driving the car in selected events for the team to run entire season. Terry did most of the driving, w/ Justin making a few starts. Bobby never ran the car, as the only time he was to appear, qualifying was rained out and team missed the race. Steve Grissom also drove the car in at least one event. Above stats were for Terry's starts only.

THE REASON FOR THE #04, WAS THAT TERRY AND JUSTIN WERE BOTH TRYING TO MAKE THE FIELD FOR THE FALL RACE IN CHARLOTTE, WITH JUSTIN RUNNING THE #44 AND TERRY TAKING #04. UNFORTUNATELY, NEITHER WERE FAST ENOUGH TO MAKE THE RACE THAT WEEKEND.

Again, the Slim Jim Team was to feature Terry and Justin driving the car in selected events throughout the season. Justin was to drive the majority of the events, but the team was simply not fast enough to be competitive. Terry only made the field for 4 of the events that he attempted, with Justin only making a few more starts, failing to qualify for many as well. In Charlotte, there was an attempt for Terry and Justin to race together (as listed above) in matching Slim Jim Cars...but neither made the field.

Another Picture of the #21 AUTO ZONE CHEVROLET

This car was driven by Terry on Tuesday, June 12 in one of the testing sessions held at the famed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course in Montreal, Quebec, in preparation for the inaugural Canadian Busch Series race scheduled for Aug. 4.

Nascar wanted a driver to test the racecar in Canada that was not going to race in The NAPA Auto Parts 200 held Aug. 4th.

“I was excited when I got the call asking if I was willing to drive at the test,” Labonte said. “I’m happy to share my opinions on things like gear ratio with the drivers who will race at this track. The fans in Canada are so passionate about their racing. I’m really looking forward to this opportunity.”

The two-time NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion (1984, 1996) and four-time series road course race winner drove RCR’s No. 21 AutoZone Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS. He made a total of 21 laps (57 miles) with a fast lap of 1:49:86 minutes at an average speed of 105.602 mph.

“The test went very well and it was an honor and quite a thrill to drive the first laps here in a NASCAR stock car,” said Labonte. “The biggest thing was figuring out the braking points that will be used for the race. We can’t get into the corners as deep as the Formula 1 cars. I think there will be at least two good places to pass so track position will be very important but it’s the same as Sonoma (Infineon Raceway) or some of the ovals that NASCAR races at.”

Labonte, retired from fulltime NASCAR competition, was chosen to be the test driver because he will not compete in the Canadian event. All the information collected from the test, including videotape taken of the course from laps in a street-legal sedan, was shared with every Busch Series team that participated in the event.
